Summarize page value in under 155 characters. Include primary keyword naturally. Add a call-to-action to boost CTR.
Google uses meta descriptions in search results only about 37% of the time (Ahrefs study). But when it does, a well-crafted description can boost CTR by 5-10%. Focus on your highest-traffic pages first for maximum impact.
In Screaming Frog: go to Meta Description tab, filter by "Missing" and "Duplicate". In Search Console: search for your pages and check if Google is auto-generating descriptions (they're usually poor quality and truncated).
Go to GA4 > Reports > Engagement > Pages and screens. Filter by organic traffic. Your top 20 pages likely account for 80% of traffic — optimize these first for maximum impact.
Google bolds the search query in meta descriptions, making keyword-rich descriptions stand out visually. Place the primary keyword in the first half of the description. Don't force it — natural reads better than stuffed.
End with a CTA verb: "Learn how to...", "Get your free...", "Discover the...", "Compare options for...". This gives users a reason to click your result over competitors. Match the CTA to the search intent.
After updating descriptions, monitor CTR in Search Console > Performance. Filter by the specific pages you changed. Wait 3-4 weeks for meaningful data. If CTR didn't improve, try a different approach (benefit-focused vs. curiosity-focused).
Act as an SEO copywriter. Write high-CTR meta descriptions for these pages. PAGES TO OPTIMIZE: (For each: URL | Primary Keyword | Page Purpose | Target Audience) 1. [URL] | [KEYWORD] | [PURPOSE: e.g., "sell running shoes" or "explain SEO basics"] | [AUDIENCE] 2. [URL] | [KEYWORD] | [PURPOSE] | [AUDIENCE] 3. [URL] | [KEYWORD] | [PURPOSE] | [AUDIENCE] [ADD MORE AS NEEDED] For each page, generate 3 variations: - Version A: Benefit-focused (what the user gains) - Version B: Urgency/FOMO-focused (why act now) - Version C: Curiosity-focused (what they'll discover) FORMAT each as: | Page | Version | Meta Description | Char Count | CTA Used | STRICT RULES: - 150-160 characters (count precisely — show the count) - Include primary keyword naturally in the first half - Must contain a clear CTA verb (Learn, Discover, Get, Find, Try, Compare, Start, Download) - Use active voice, not passive - No quotation marks (Google may truncate) - Each must be unique — no duplicate descriptions across pages - Don't start with "This page..." or "We offer..." ALSO PROVIDE: - A meta description template I can reuse: "[Benefit statement with keyword]. [CTA]. [Differentiator]." - Flag any pages where Google is likely to auto-generate a description instead (and why)
