Ensure Name, Address, and Phone are identical across all directories. Inconsistencies hurt local rankings.
The most common NAP inconsistency is abbreviations: "St" vs "Street", "Ste" vs "Suite", "Dr" vs "Drive". Pick one format and use it everywhere. Even small inconsistencies confuse Google's entity matching algorithm.
Write out your exact business name, address, and phone number in the format you want used everywhere. Use the same abbreviations (or lack thereof) consistently. Example: "Acme Web Design, 123 Main Street, Suite 100, Portland, OR 97201, (503) 555-1234".
Search your business name in Google and check the first 3 pages of results. Visit each listing and compare NAP to your canonical format. Use BrightLocal or Moz Local for automated scans. Common places to check: Google, Yelp, Facebook, Bing, Apple Maps, BBB.
Log into each directory and update your listing to match your canonical NAP format. This includes: Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook Business Page, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Yellow Pages, industry-specific directories, and your website footer.
BrightLocal: enter your business details and it scans 40+ directories for inconsistencies. Moz Local: similar scanning plus it pushes correct NAP to data aggregators. Both tools provide ongoing monitoring and alerts for new inconsistencies.
Set a quarterly reminder to re-scan your listings. New directories may scrape incorrect info from data aggregators. Customer-contributed data on Google Maps and Yelp can introduce errors. Catch and fix them quickly.
