Pitch newsworthy stories, original data, and expert commentary. One major publication placement outweighs dozens of low-quality links.
One link from a major publication (NYT, Forbes, BBC) is worth more than 100 links from small blogs. Digital PR is the fastest way to build domain authority, but it requires newsworthy angles — not self-promotion.
Journalists need data and expert sources. Conduct a survey, analyze your industry data, or compile a comprehensive report. The story angle should be genuinely newsworthy: surprising findings, counter-intuitive data, or timely relevance to current events.
Use Twitter/X to find journalists covering your niche. Check their recent articles for topical fit. Use tools like Muck Rack or Cision for contact info. Build a spreadsheet: journalist name, publication, beat, email, recent articles, notes.
Keep emails under 150 words. Lead with the data/finding, not your company. Subject line should tease the story angle. Include one specific statistic in the opening sentence. Offer yourself as an expert source. Attach or link the full research.
Send one follow-up email 3-5 days after the initial pitch. If no response, move on. Journalists receive hundreds of pitches daily — rejection is normal. A 5-10% response rate is considered successful in digital PR.
Don't only reach out when you want something. Share their articles, provide expert quotes when they need sources, offer exclusive data. Over time, journalists will come to you proactively when they need an expert in your field.
