Monitor & Disavow Toxic Links — Step-by-Step Guide

Audit your backlink profile monthly. Disavow harmful links that could trigger algorithmic penalties.

Pro Tip

Google is very good at ignoring spammy links on its own. Only use the Disavow Tool if you've received a manual penalty notification in Search Console or if you previously engaged in link schemes. Over-disavowing can hurt more than help.

Warning

The Disavow Tool is powerful and irreversible until you re-upload. Disavowing legitimate links will actively hurt your rankings. When in doubt, leave a link alone — Google usually ignores low-quality links automatically.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Export your full backlink profile from Ahrefs or Semrush

In Ahrefs: Site Explorer > Backlink Profile > Backlinks. Export all backlinks. In Semrush: Backlink Analytics > Backlinks. Sort by domain authority ascending to spot low-quality links first.

2

Flag links from: spammy sites, irrelevant foreign domains, link farms

Red flags: DR 0-5 sites with thousands of outbound links, sites in languages unrelated to yours, sites that are obviously link farms or PBNs, sites with no real content. Mark these as potentially toxic in your spreadsheet.

3

Attempt manual removal first (contact webmaster)

Before disavowing, try to get the link removed. Find the site owner's contact info and politely request removal. Keep records of your outreach attempts — this shows Google you tried if you later file a reconsideration request.

4

Create a disavow file for remaining toxic links

Create a plain text file (.txt). Use "domain:spamsite.com" to disavow entire domains (preferred) or individual URLs. Add comments with # to explain why each is disavowed. Only include links you're confident are harmful.

5

Submit via Google's Disavow Tool

Go to search.google.com/search-console/disavow-links. Select your property. Upload your disavow file. Google will process it over weeks — effects are not immediate. You can re-upload at any time to update the list.

6

Monitor monthly for new toxic links

Set up Ahrefs Alerts for new backlinks to your domain. Review new links monthly. Most toxic links can be safely ignored — only add to your disavow file if you see patterns of spammy links targeting your site.
